Multiple pedestrians were struck Monday in Toronto when a van jumped the curb and drove onto the sidewalk, and the vehicle’s driver was later arrested, police said.
It was not immediately clear if there were any injuries or fatalities, and Toronto police have not said if authorities believe the crash was a deliberate act.
A tweet from the Toronto Police Operations Centre said a “possible” eight to 10 pedestrians were struck by a white van on Yonge Street and Finch Avenue East, a busy section in the northern part of the city.
Police announced the van was located and its driver was arrested.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau wrote on Twitter, “Our thoughts are with all those affected by the terrible incident at Yonge and Finch in Toronto. Thank you to the first responders working at the scene – we’re monitoring the situation closely.”
